“A Child’s character grows as they persuade themselves of the truth of it.” Helen Parkhurst*
To affect permanent character development in the child, she/he must arrive at it themselves, they must persuade themselves of the truth of it. No amount to lecturing with lots of ‘you shoulds‘ aids them in this work. To really help them to grow, we need to allow them to discover it themselves. And most importantly, it takes time for the child to see and feel the different viewpoints and learn from that. They have such little experience to draw upon. Be patient and trust given time and freedom to express themselves, they will find their way.
For example if we have a discussion about ‘Sportsmanship‘ with it heading towards What it means to be a good sport or bad loser, as they see different side of Winning and Losing, they might be able to discover on what they are others feel. We help their character by grow letting them discover these different view points and from there character is developed.
